Wolf Behavior

How wolves hunt, protect, and rest

How Do Wolves Get Food?

Wolves are pack hunters:

  • Hunt in packs to take down large prey (moose, deer, bison)
  • Work together to chase and tire out prey
  • Use stamina — run up to 35 mph over long distances
  • Alpha pair leads; pups learn by watching
  • Scavenge carrion when needed

How Do They Protect Themselves?

Wolves stay safe by:

  • Living in tight family packs (5–11 members)
  • Using howling to warn others, mark territory, locate members, sound alarms
  • Strong jaws (1,500 psi bite!) and speed to escape or fight
  • Hiding pups in underground dens

Sleeping Habits

Wolves are crepuscular (active at dawn/dusk):

  • Rest in short naps and longer periods (6–8 hours total)
  • Sleep in sheltered spots, snow beds, under trees, or near dens
  • Pack sleeps close together for warmth and safety
