Wolf Behavior
How wolves hunt, protect, and rest
How Do Wolves Get Food?
Wolves are pack hunters:
- Hunt in packs to take down large prey (moose, deer, bison)
- Work together to chase and tire out prey
- Use stamina — run up to 35 mph over long distances
- Alpha pair leads; pups learn by watching
- Scavenge carrion when needed
How Do They Protect Themselves?
Wolves stay safe by:
- Living in tight family packs (5–11 members)
- Using howling to warn others, mark territory, locate members, sound alarms
- Strong jaws (1,500 psi bite!) and speed to escape or fight
- Hiding pups in underground dens
Sleeping Habits
Wolves are crepuscular (active at dawn/dusk):
- Rest in short naps and longer periods (6–8 hours total)
- Sleep in sheltered spots, snow beds, under trees, or near dens
- Pack sleeps close together for warmth and safety
